Fig Trees are low-maintenance once established and thrive with basic, consistent care. They prefer full sun, good air circulation, and well-draining soil. Regular pruning helps maintain shape, encourages healthy branching, and improves fruit production. Remove dead or crossing branches annually, and thin the canopy to allow light penetration. Fig trees are resilient and tolerate a wide range of growing conditions, making them suitable for beginners and experienced growers alike.
Planting & Container Size
When planting in the ground, choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth as the nursery container. Backfill gently, water thoroughly, and mulch around the base while keeping mulch away from the trunk. For container planting, use a high-quality potting mix designed for trees or fruiting plants. Proper planting ensures strong root establishment and long-term success.
Fig trees perform very well in containers, making them ideal for patios, balconies, and controlled spaces. Start young trees in a 10–15 gallon container and gradually move up to 20–30 gallons as they mature. Larger containers help regulate moisture, support root development, and limit excessive top growth. Container growing also allows easy relocation during colder months and helps manage overall tree size without sacrificing fruit production.
Fertilizer
Fig trees benefit from light but regular feeding during the growing season. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or an organic fruit tree blend in spring and early summer. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which promotes leaf growth at the expense of fruit. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and improve soil health. Once established, fig trees are drought-tolerant and require minimal supplemental feeding.
Fig trees prefer consistent watering, especially during establishment and fruit development. Water deeply when the top few inches of soil begin to dry, ensuring excess water drains freely. Container-grown figs require more frequent watering, particularly during hot weather. Once mature, fig trees tolerate short dry periods, but even moisture leads to healthier growth and better fruit quality.
Best Locations
Outdoors, fig trees thrive in full sun locations with protection from strong winds. They are ideal for gardens, orchards, courtyards, and along fences or walls where reflected heat can boost growth. In cooler climates, fig trees can be grown indoors near bright south- or west-facing windows or in sunrooms. Indoor figs should receive at least 6–8 hours of bright light daily and benefit from being moved outdoors during warm seasons. Their bold foliage makes them attractive focal plants in both indoor and outdoor spaces.
Before You Plant Outdoors
At the nursery these plants are grown under 20-40% shade cloth. If you plant in a brightly lit area you may experience leaf burn. It is best to acclimate this plant to its environment by keeping it outside and slowly moving it into a sunny area over a week or two to avoid stress before planting.

Before leaving, plants are inspected, watered, and pruned. Larger plants will be topped to 36" or 48" overall, depending on the variety, if necessary, to facilitate shipping. Your new plants' pot is then bagged to ensure that the soil stays in the pot and not loose in the box. Plants are tissue or kraft paper wrapped and generally secured in place with natural biodegradable peanuts. Plant growing zones listed are a general guide. We recommend checking your local microclimate and doing a bit of extra research on your new plants before planting outdoors. Patio zone recommendations are for summer enjoyment—depending on your winter temperatures, plants may need to be brought indoors for protection.
