Banyan Tree (ficus benghalensis)


Easily maintained as a potted plant by occasional grooming of the branches and aerial roots. In-ground Banyan is one of the widest canopy trees the world with the largest known covering 3.7 acres of land with over 2,000 aerial roots forming multiple trunks. The large leaves are glossy and have light veins, the fruits are small and red and are much enjoyed by the wildlife. A sacred tree in India it makes an unusual and attractive ornamental for the tropics.
