Macadamia Nut Tree (macadamia integrifolia)

Macadamia nuts are among the most expensive, highest quality, and hardest to crack nuts in the world. Large 50 foot trees have a branch span of as much as 30 feet and produce showy hanging spikes of creamy white flowers that develop into clusters of smooth shelled nuts. Macadamia trees can self-pollinate, but bees are the principal pollinating agents. A macadamia tree usually begins producing fruit about six to seven years after planting, and may continue producing for up to 60 years. An average tree will produce from 60 to 150 pounds of nuts annually. The nuts are commonly used in baking, but they are often eaten fresh or roasted as well. Small trees are well suited to patio container growing and produce nuts regularly.
